Montour High’s football team has concerns, just like every other squad.
Don’t count quarterback depth as one of the Spartans’ worries, though. They have three of them, including a familiar name — Tynen Greer.
Greer, a junior who transferred from Shenango last November, is enjoying his first fall at Montour and has the Spartans atop the WPIAL Class AAA rankings. They welcome Mohawk in a nonconference battle tonight.
Greer left Shenango after he and another student-athlete received summary citations for disorderly conduct for an incident that involved a third student. He has made a fresh start at Montour.
“It’s special here,” he said. “The coaches, the players, the fans — it’s everything. It’s just awesome to play here.”
Montour head coach Lou Cerro looked to replace the graduated Dillon Buechel, who finished his career as the second-leading passer in WPIAL history and led the team to last year’s WPIAL championship game. Senior Ryan Mihelcic, senior Max Rosinsky (a West Allegheny transfer) and Greer competed for the spot and Cerro decided to use all three through the team’s first two games, both wins.
“All three earned the right to play. No one really separated themselves,” Cerro said. “What we’re doing is probably not a good thing but it’s working right now and we’ll stick with it for right now. We’re rotating those three guys and Tynen has taken advantage of his opportunities. Hopefully, he keeps doing that for weeks to come.”
The three QBs rotate each series. However, it was Greer who was under center and guided the Spartans to a last-minute touchdown to tie Central Valley in last week’s game. Greer got the call again in overtime and tossed a TD pass. The Warriors scored on their possession, too, but the Spartans denied a 2-point conversion to seal the 28-27 upset win.
“Coach Lou just told me it was my turn, so I went in,” Greer said. “That was probably one of the greatest games I’ll ever play. It was just fun to win. I am happy we’re No. 1 in WPIAL.”
Greer, who also plays basketball at Montour, passed for 350 yards and three touchdowns last year at Shenango. He broke into the starting lineup as a freshman and threw for 459 yards and three scores.
“You can tell he has started some games. He is pretty poised back there,” Cerro said. “He is not afraid to tuck the ball on the option, too. He sits in that pocket, but he knows he can get out of the pocket when he needs to make throws. He’s getting better each and every week.”
After welcoming the Warriors tonight, Montour (2-0 overall and in conference) visits New Castle for a key Parkway Conference battle next week.
“New Castle is always good and that game is always fun,” Greer said. “They have a bunch of athletes. I know a lot of them from playing basketball.”
However, Greer is not looking ahead. He’s trying to win the starting QB spot outright, while working together with Mihelcic and Rosinsky.
“We’re always going to be competitive because we all want the starting job. But, we have to be friends because it only helps each of us,” he said. “Ryan is more of a passer. Max has only attempted five passes. He is a good runner. I am more of a passer. Last year, I got away from that. I am not built to run. I’d rather stay in the pocket and throw to somebody.
“What we’re doing is working. We’re doing whatever the coaches to tell us to do. As long as it works, we’ll stick with it,” he continued. “It’s a lot of fun. I can’t wait to play each week. I wish Friday was every day.”
