FOURTH-QUARTER UPDATE: The Spartans increased their lead to 24-14 with 10:22 to play when Jake McDougal ran in from six yards. Wertz blasted a 32-yard field goal to boost Laurel’s lead to 27-14 with 2:01 to go.
THIRD-QUARTER UPDATE: The Wolverines came out with a strong drive to open the second half. Barrett capped it with a 2-yard run and a 14-10 advantage. Laurel surged ahead when it had the guests pinned deep in their own territory. Luke Flynn recovered a loose ball and ran three yards for a touchdown. There was a bad snap on the PAT kick, but Wertz recovered to hit Peluso for a 2-point coversion and an 18-14 lead.
SECOND-QUARTER UPDATE: Laurel marched 80 yards on 15 plays to grab a 7-0 lead with 9:16 left in the first half. Clayton Sharek capped the march with a 2-yard TD run. Ellwood City tied it at 7-all just before halftime. D.J. Barrett found Mario Street for a 15-yard TD pass with 1:37 left. Noah Wertz booted a 44-yard field goal with 2.1 seconds remaining in the half for a 10-7 Spartans lead.
FIRST-QUARTER UPDATE: Laurel had a chance to strike on its first drive, but Noah Wertz hooked a 32-yard field goal attempt wide left with 8:31 left in the first quarter.
