A little thunder and lightning led to a perfect storm last night for New Castle.
Daylyn Glenel and Nick Treloar combined for 411 yards rushing to help lead the Red Hurricane to a wild 43-37 triumph over Moon in WPIAL Class AAA Parkway Conference clash at Taggart Stadium.
The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Treloar provided the thunder with some punishing runs. He had 194 yards on 16 carries. The 5-9, 160-pound Glenel was the lightning and gave the hosts quick-strike ability. He racked up 207 yards on 15 touches. Both juniors scored a pair of touchdowns.
“It’s a nice little combo right there,” New Castle coach Joe Cowart said. “They put on a performance.”
Indeed. Glenel reached the end zone on his first two carries. He broke loose for a 44-yard burst in the first quarter. He added a 58-yard paydirt sprint in the second quarter. He added a 50-yard voyage to help set up another touchdown late in the game.
“It was super awesome. I can’t even describe it,” said Glenel, who had 115 yards in the first half. “It feels so good to win.”
Treloar got into a rhythm in the second half. He rushed for 163 yards on 14 carries in the final two quarters, including a 59-yard outburst. He tallied New Castle’s final two touchdowns on the night.
“I was feeling good. I wanted to get the win,” Treloar said. “Our line played great tonight. I put it all on them.”
The victory gave the ’Canes (1-3 conference, 1-4 overall) a much-needed confidence boost after a slow start.
“Relief is a good description of it. It’s pretty sweet the way it happened. We have been mired in bad things happening to us and not responding well,” Cowart said. “I thought, collectively as a unit, everybody responded so well on both sides of the football. All the mistakes we piled on top of other tonight didn’t stick a stake in us. We were able to overcome and that’s the sign of a pretty good football team.”
New Castle got off to a strong start and held a 13-3 lead early in the second. However, the Tigers (2-2, 2-3) came back. After a touchdown cut their deficit to 13-10 late in the quarter, they benefited from a ’Canes fumble of the ensuing kickoff. Two plays later, Moon took its first lead, 17-13, on an Aleksei Yaramus 10-yard run.
Misfortune struck the ’Canes two more times in the third quarter. Early in the frame, quarterback Pat Minenok was hit and lost the ball. Thomas Dean snatched it on a bounce and ran 38 yards into the end zone for a 24-13 advantage.
Minenok found Joe Gunn for a 35-yard TD pass to trim New Castle’s deficit to 24-21. However, Moon picked off a Minenok pass near the end of the quarter to set up a short TD run, which boosted its lead to 30-21 at the horn.
Both sides traded scores throughout the fourth. Minenok scored on a 1-yard run and Treloar rambled in from 10 yards to put the hosts up, 36-30, with 6:01 to go. The Tigers regained the lead, 37-36, with 2:46 on the clock.
Treloar answered when he knifed his way through the defense for a 25-yard TD run and a 43-37 with 1:17 remaining.
“We showed some resiliency tonight and signs of it for the first time really this year. It’s the sign of a young team. We came of age. We grew up a lot tonight,” Cowart said. “We took a big step forward. We were kind of anticipating that. No one has hung their head in the lockerroom. The kids have been fantastic in practice. We were waiting for those moments to culminate in a big-game performance and it certainly did tonight.”
The Tigers had a final chance to produce a touchdown, but the guests’ drive stalled after securing a lone first down. The ’Canes sacked Yaramus as time ran out.
“It was a sweet way to end the game,” Cowart said. “Offensively, we put our defense in some bad positions tonight to make the score look like it did. I think our defense played better than the points on the scoreboard.”
