Laurel burned by long pass, penalties
Laurel (15) vs. Derry (19)
Written: Sep 20, 2014
A long pass to start the fourth quarter made the difference in Laurel High’s 19-15 nonconference loss to Derry.
The 56-yard scoring strike from quarterback Trey Friedline to Nico Latta on the first play of the fourth quarter stood up as the deciding points in last night’s nonconference game on the Spartans’ home field.
Laurel had two final chances to re-take the lead, but penalties played a big role in killing those chances. The Spartans’ first drive ended at midfield, while the second ended when Laurel turned the ball over on downs at its own 33 with 1:28 to go.
Clayton Sharek scored first for Laurel on a 35-yard run in the second quarter. Derry pulled to within 7-6 at the half, but took a 12-7 advantage early in the third period.
Quarterback Jake McDougal put the Spartans back up 15-12 with a 13-yard run heading into the fourth, when Derry put the eventual winning points on the board.
Laurel had 250 yards rushing, but none passing. Leading rushers were Sharek with 82 yards on nine carries, McDougal with 77 on 15 carries and Matty Conway with 61 on 13 tries.
The Spartans slipped to 1-3. Derry is now 2-2.
Laurel travels to Beaver Falls on Friday night for a Midwestern Athletic Conference clash.
