Ellwood comes close to upset of Riverside
Ellwood City (13) vs. Riverside (14)
Written: Oct 22, 2016
The Ellwood City Lincoln High football team suffered a heartbreaking loss Friday night.
The winless Wolverines took archrival Riverside to overtime last night before falling 14-13 in overtime in non-conference action on the Panthers' field.
Ellwood (0-8) played even or better in nearly every statistical category with Riverside, but racked up 10 penalties for 79 yards compared to the Panthers' 2 for 28. One penalty, especially, proved to be costly.
The Wolverines went up 6-0 on a 7-yard run by Richard Pitrelli in the second quarter and Riverside (6-2) tied it with 1:57 left in the game on a 6-yard pass from Ben Hughes to Austin Dambach.
In the overtime, Andrew O'Brien scored on a 6-yard run. Jonathan Jefferson added the point-after kick.
The Panthers faced a third-and-goal from the Ellwood 15 when they got possession of the ball. It appeared that the game might be over when Donavin Chambers intercepted a Hughes, pass, but was called for defensive pass interference.
The Panthers eventually scored on a 4-yard pass from Hughes to Dambach. Riverside gambled and went for two and successfully converted it, again on a Dambach pass from Hughes.
Pitrelli led the Wolverines in rushing with 70 yards on 18 carries.
Ellwood closes out its season next Friday night at home against Quaker Valley.
