Spencer DeMedal is in a groove for the Wilmington High football team.
The junior running back-turned-quarterback connected on 17 of 25 attempts through the air for 235 yards and three touchdowns as Wilmington blanked Mercer 42-0 in the District 10, Region 1-A opener for both teams Friday night. DeMedal was 16 of 22 for 190 yards in a season-opening win over Grove City last week.
Wilmington is now 2-0 overall, while the Mustangs are 1-1.
DeMedal’s favorite target was Bryson Verrelli, who had five catches for 86 yards. Kyle Slicker had two catches for 43 yards, Mark Shenker two for 36, Jack Patton four for 39 and Colton Marett three for 22.
Shenker was the leading rusher with eight carries for 58 yards. DeMedal checked in with five carries for 37 yards.
The Greyhounds went up 21-0 after one quarter and never were threatened. Patton scored first on a 1-yard run and Shenker and Verrelli both added touchdown passes from DeMedal in the opening frame. Jacob Winters tacked on all six point-after kicks.
