The offense couldn’t get going last night for the Mohawk High football team.
The Warriors managed just two first downs and 67 yards of total offense in a 43-0 loss to Midwestern Athletic Conference rival Beaver.
The Bobcats have outscored their opponents, 205-13 on the year.
“They’ve been suffocating teams all year,” Mohawk coach Joe Lamenza said of Beaver’s defense. “I don’t know how they compare to others in double-A. But I can’t imagine many teams playing as good as defense as they are right now.”
The Warriors (0-6 conference, 0-6 overall) have the longest active losing streak in the county at 11 games.
“Right now, there’s only three weeks left in the year. We have improved a lot,” Lamenza said. “To the typical fan in the stands, there’s probably little things that go unnoticed; we’re just growing up as a team.
“We still have four or five freshmen or sophomores starting for us. That’s half of the team starting. You’re not going to win many games in the MAC with that kind of youth.”
The Bobcats (5-0 conference, 6-0 overall) are ranked No. 4 in the WPIAL in Class AA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Shane McFarland paced the Warriors with 25 yards rushing on seven carries. He hauled in three passes as well for 32 yards.
Mohawk’s Tim Glass returned from a shoulder injury and was 3 for 7 through the air for 32 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Glass hasn’t played since the opener against Beaver Falls.
“We’re happy to have Tim back,” Lamenza said. “He brings some maturity.
“Even though he wasn’t a starter in past years, he did bring experience and he’s a great leader.”
Curt Lanctot scored three touchdowns for Beaver along with a two-point conversion.
Mohawk returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts unbeaten Greensburg Central Catholic in nonconference action.
