A long season became longer for the Mohawk High football team last night.
The Warriors fell to Greensburg Central Catholic 43-6 in a nonsection game at Mohawk.
The Centurions (7-0) used a powerful running attack, amassing 330 yards on a sloppy field, to overwhelm the Warriors (0-7). Greensburg Central Catholic is ranked No. 3 in the WPIAL in Class AA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Greensburg Central Catholic scored on its first three possessions to take a 21-0 lead in the second quarter before Mohawk picked up a first down.
Tim Glass hit junior wideout Austin Main for 21 yards to get the Warriors offense in gear. The momentum seemed short-lived as the next three plays resulted in a minus eight yards.
These Warriors do not quit.
Mohawk went into its bag of tricks facing a fourth and 18 from its 39.
John Hartzell found freshmen Brandon McPherson for 48 yards on a perfectly executed fake punt.
Two plays later, Tim Glass got the Warriors on the board when he fought his way into the end zone from 15 yards out.
“I’m proud of our effort,” Mohawk coach Joe Lamenza said. “We’ve got four sophomores and a freshman on the field on most plays. They have improved every week. We’ve faced three top 10 teams in a row and these kids keep fighting. I’m extremely proud of them.”
Greensburg Central Catholic used a 77-yard kickoff return by Jordan McCrae to start the third quarter and retake control of the contest. McCrae took it in from 11 yards out.
A two-point conversion pushed the Centurions lead to a more comfortable 29-6.
Mohawk gets back to conference play when it hosts Aliquippa at 7 p.m. Friday.
