Shaffer, Jones star in Spartans' victory
Laurel (27) vs. South Side Beaver (13)
Written: Sep 17, 2016
Will Shaffer and Spencer Jones got the Laurel High football team back on track Friday night.
The duo sparked the Spartans' offense in a 27-13 WPIAL Class 2A Midwestern Conference victory at South Side Beaver.
Laurel, which squandered scoring opportunities in a 24-7 loss to Riverside last week, is now 2-1 in the conference, 3-1 overall. The Rams slipped to 1-1 and 1-2.
Shaffer, the Spartans' freshman quarterback, was 9 of 16 through the air for 159 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Jones rushed for 124 yards on 30 carries.
Laurel got the scoring started with a 1-yard touchdown run by Jones, followed by Andrew Perry's kick.
The Spartans' big quarter came in the third, when Jones scored on a 2-yard run, then on a 53-yard pass from Shaffer to Phillip Telesz. Perry added both PAT kicks.
"He throws real nice and he's learning fast," Laurel coach Brian Cooper said of Shaffer. "I was concerned about starting a freshman, but he's proved he can do the job."
Laurel's final TD came on a 1-yard run by Jones.
Telesz caught two passes for 71 yards for the Spartans. Telesz also had two sacks and recovered a fumble and Jones intercepted a pass.
"Last year, Telesz was our defensive MVP," Cooper said. "He causes a lot of concern for the other team. We played a great, physical game on both lines. We ran very consistently and had great pressure on South Side Beaver's quarterback."
