The night belonged to Dalton Rosta.
The Laurel High senior fullback rushed for a career-high 201 yards on 13 carries in the Spartans’ 49-6 WPIAL Class A Big Seven Conference rout of Western Beaver.
The win was a big one for the Spartans (4-1 conference, 5-1 overall), who came into the game tied for third place in the conference with the Golden Beavers (3-2, 3-3).
Rosta’s big game came on the heels of a 102-yard, 31-carry outing by fellow running back Matty Conway last week.
“We try to spread the ball around — tonight was Dalton Rosta’s week and last week’s was Matty Conway’s,” first-year Laurel coach Pat Cuba said. “I give major kudos to our lines, both sides played well.
“I was a little surprised at the final outcome because Western Beaver is a physical team,” he added. “Tonight, our kids played four quarters. It was good to see them put it all together like that.”
A big hit on Western Beaver quarterback Steve Robison by Steven Reeher caused a fumble that was picked up by Aaron Vanasco to set up the Spartans’ first touchdown. Four plays later, Rosta scored his first six-pointer, from 31 yards out.
Conway scored on a 26-yard run early in the second quarter and Rosta added runs of 26 and 12 yards to push the Spartans’ lead to 27-0 at the half. Rosta rushed for 157 yards on 10 carries in the first half, with Laurel amassing 284 yards of its 390 yards on the ground in the opening two quarters.
Conway sealed the deal when he returned the second-half kickoff 80 yards to the score.
Rosta had one more touchdown in him, this time a 38-yarder, and Phillip Telesz closed out the scoring with a 2-yard run late in the game.
