The Laurel High football team celebrated Senior Night in style last night.
Seniors Dylan Jones and Ryan Hites paved the way for the Spartans in a 42-7 season-ending Midwestern Athletic Conference victory over Mohawk at muddy Spartans Stadium Field.
Jones and Hites accounted for all but 12 yards as Laurel marched 59 yards on its first possession to take a 6-0 lead.
Jones was the workhorse for the Spartans (4-4 conference, 4-5 overall) again on a 58-yard touchdown drive to open the second quarter.
He ran seven times for 32 yards on the nine-play drive, powering his way into the end zone from seven yards out for the touchdown. For good measure, Jones also scored the two-point conversion.
Mohawk (0-8 conference, 0-9 overall) picked up its only two first downs on the ensuing drive when disaster struck.
Josh Dando picked off an errant Tim Glass throw at the Laurel 45 and took it all the way for a 20-0 Laurel advantage.
Mohawk has not quit all year and last night would be no different.
On the Warriors’ next possession, Shane McFarland took a handoff at their own 43 and outraced the Spartans defense for a 57-yard touchdown.
Mohawk’s momentum was short-lived.
With nine seconds left before the half, Brandon Ritchie answered for Laurel.
He found James Steele alone for an eight-yard touchdown. Jones, of course, bulled in for the two-point conversion and a 28-7 lead.
Mohawk had only three possessions the entire second half as Laurel marched for two more touchdowns.
“We had some disappointment this year,” Laurel coach Jerry Holzhauser said. “But in the end, these kids played hard every single game.”
Jones, his number 26 obscured with mud, finished the night with 28 carries for 158 yards. He has not decided where he will play football next year.
“I’m just waiting to see if a team wants me,” Jones said later. “I’m gonna miss this a lot. It was just so much fun being out there. The best part was just being with my team.”
Laurel will miss him, too.
