HOUSTON – The Laurel High football team played one for the history books on Friday.
Trailing 6-3 with 2:22 remaining in the fourth quarter of their WPIAL Class AA first round matchup with host Chartiers-Houston, the Spartans blocked a punt and senior Spencer Jones returned the ball 25 yards for a touchdown to give his team the lead and win, 10-6.
"I just saw the ball on the ground and had players behind me, just grabbed it, almost fell and took off," Jones said of the return. "It's probably one of the best feelings I've ever had in my life."
Laurel (8-3) fought the Buccaneers (7-4) tooth and nail throughout the contest. In fact, Chartiers-Houston didn't run an offensive play until the start of the second quarter. The Spartans used a balanced attack to drive 63 yards and took over nine minutes off the clock to start the game, leading to an Andrew Perry field goal. On the ensuing kickoff, the Buccaneers failed to field the ball and Laurel recovered at the Chartiers-Houston 35-yard line.
The Spartans offense went to work again, driving down to the hosts 9 before Perry had a field goal blocked on the final play of the first quarter. The Buccaneers then missed a short field goal of their own after moving the ball to the Laurel 8. Late in the second quarter, Chartiers-Houston finally got on the board, taking the lead on a quarterback sneak by senior T.J. Johnston with seven seconds remaining in the half. The point-after attempt was blocked and the Spartans went into the half down just 6-3.
After a series of punts in the third and fourth quarters, the Laurel special teams unit seized its opportunity. The Spartans came close to blocking a couple of punts earlier in the contest. This time they made no mistake. With 2:30 remaining in the game, Jones and a host of teammates broke through the Buccaneers' line and blocked the kick of Chartiers-Houston senior A.J. Myers. The ball took one bounce, Jones scooped it up and went off to the races, returning the ball for a touchdown and giving his team a lead it would not relinquish.
Four plays later, senior Jordan Dantico picked off a Johnston pass and the Spartans had all but won. Jones added two runs for first downs and Laurel took a knee to secure the win.
"It's unbelievable," Laurel coach Brian Cooper said of the game-winning block. "We were so close so many times and we knew it was obviously a great opportunity to get after it and create something there, and to be able to scoop and score off of it obviously just added to it."
Cooper said that despite the stout Chartiers-Houston defense, he was confident his team would find the point necessary to pull out the victory.
"I wasn't nervous about it at the end of the game," he said. "I just felt like we had the opportunities and one of them have to go. You just have so many opportunities and you're like, 'man, the odds are in your favor that one of them you're gonna cash in.'"
In addition to the punt block, Jones carried the ball 16 times for 84 yards to account for one-third of his team's total offense.
"We felt we had some opportunities to be able to work the run and they were there," Cooper said.
The Spartans will now face top-seeded Steel Valley in the second round. The Ironmen are 10-0 on the year and feature one of the most highly recruited athletes in the country in Paris Ford, who is currently committed to play for the University of Pittsburgh.
"I'm gonna enjoy tonight, first off, and then start what we do every week," Cooper said. "We'll break down film and get ready for them, we know they're a very explosive team."
Laurel and its fans will certainly enjoy tonight, as Cooper said, as the team heads to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2009. That year, the Spartans advanced all the way to the district semifinals.
