Laurel junior breaks rushing record in win over New Brighton
Laurel (19) vs. New Brighton (7)

Dylan Jones did it all last night for the Laurel High football team.
Jones rolled up 289 rushing yards on 31 dashes to propel the Spartans to a 19-7 Midwestern Athletic Conference victory over New Brighton. Jones established a single-game school record with his 289 rushing yards to give him 889 for the season.
A junior, Jones scored all three touchdowns for Laurel (2-3 MAC, 3-3 overall). His 22-yard scamper with 4:27 remaining put the game away.
“Everyone blocked amazing,” Jones said. “After New Brighton cut the lead, I said that everybody needed to do their job and not rely on just me, but everyone. That’s what they did.”
Jones eclipsed the old mark of 280 yards set by Mike Weaver.
“Dylan is quite a runner,” Spartans coach Jerry Holzhauser said. “He’s a very talented ball carrier who plays with a smile on his face all the time.”
The Lions (0-5, 1-5) caught Laurel by surprise on the opening kickoff, recovering their own onside kick. However, New Brighton turned the ball over on downs at the Spartans 6.
Jones broke a scoreless battle when he dashed in from 35 yards out in the second quarter. He carried the ball four times for 54 yards on the drive.
New Brighton threatened late in the half, advancing to the Spartans’ 3. But Laurel sacked quarterback Mike Nevill for a loss of five yards to take over on downs.
The score remained 6-0 until Jones’ 61-yard paydirt scamper in the fourth stanza.
Laurel returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday for a pivotal MAC clash at Ellwood City Lincoln.
