Poor offense stifles Union
Union (0) vs. Sto-Rox (46)
Written: Oct 02, 2010
McKEES ROCKS — The Union High football team couldn’t get started last night.
The Scotties managed just 43 yards of total offense to go along with four turnovers in a 46-0 Big Seven Conference loss to Sto-Rox.
The mercy rule kicked in with 4:31 remaining in the third quarter.
Union’s deepest penetration was down to the Vikings’ 33 in the first quarter.
Sto-Rox (2-1 conference, 4-1 overall), which is ranked No. 3 in the WPIAL in Class A by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, led 18-0 at the half.
“We knew Sto-Rox was a quality football team coming down here,” Scotties coach Stacy Robinson said. “We had opportunities early. But when they started scoring, it just started steamrolling.”
Andre Jones, Tre Major and Chris Cooper missed the game for the Scotties (1-2, 2-3) because of a one-game suspension for their parts in a brawl against South Side Beaver last week.
Joe Salmen, subbing at quarterback for Jones, was 6 of 12 through the air for 54 yards and a pair of interceptions. All of his completions came in the first half.
Josh Beverly paced the Vikings with 116 yards rushing on 15 scampers and a pair of touchdowns.
Union returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts conference rival Neshannock.
