INDUSTRY — The Union High football team’s offense couldn’t get going Saturday.
The Scotties managed just 130 yards of total offense in dropping a 38-6 Big Seven Conference decision to Western Beaver in the season finale.
Union (2-7) closed the season on a five-game losing streak. The Scotties are just 14-49 since their last trip to the WPIAL playoffs in 2003.
“I thought our guys gave an effort to keep it close,” Union coach Stacy Robinson said. “I have no answer to our woes. If someone does, come give the answer to me.
“We played a lot of kids all year. You want to win, but sometimes when you’re young you’re outmatched. Hopefully we learned from our experience but I still hope they don’t get discouraged from losing.”
The Golden Beavers (5-2, 6-3) are in the WPIAL Class A playoffs as the fourth-place team in the conference.
The Scotties’ Wayne Seamans tied the game at 6 when he returned an interception 23 yards for a score with 5:31 left in the first quarter. But the visitors wouldn’t be heard from the rest of the day.
Union trailed 18-6 at the half. The Scotties netted just 33 yards of offense in the second half and got only as close as the Western Beaver 46 in the final 24 minutes.
Carrington Bell paced Union with 35 yards rushing on nine attempts.
Jack Balser led the Golden Beavers with three touchdowns, while Dustin Creel rolled up 116 yards rushing on nine attempts.
