Written: Oct 15, 2011
The Wilmington High football team took another step at claiming the outright District 10, Region 3-AA championship last night.
Anthony Derrick scored three touchdowns to lift the Greyhounds to a 41-7 region victory over Titusville.
Derrick added 44 yards rushing on 11 carries, while hauling in a pass for 12 yards.
Wilmington (4-0 region, 6-1 overall) bounced back from last week’s 17-0 loss to District 10, Class AAA member Grove City. It was the first shutout the Greyhounds suffered since a 24-0 blanking against Ford City in the 2007 season opener.
Wilmington can lock up the region crown outright with a victory over league rival Sharon (1-2, 1-6) at 7 p.m. Friday on the Greyhounds’ home turf.
Jayce Corklin ran the opening kickoff back 87 yards for a touchdown for Titusville (1-4, 2-5). Dan Stearns converted the extra point and the Rockets held a 7-0 buffer.
Derrick scored Wilmington’s first two touchdowns and Ryan Crawford added a 52-yard scoring run. Gunnar Donati ran in the two-point conversion for the Greyhounds after Crawford’s scoring scamper for a 20-7 buffer in the second quarter.
Cameron Rossi hauled in a 37-yard scoring aerial from Josh Tekac and Harrison Sturm booted the conversion kick through the sticks for a 27-7 halftime Wilmington advantage.
The Greyhounds’ defense allowed just three first downs and 41 total yards.
