Beatty leads Mohawk to first win of season

FREEDOM — Senior quarterback Johnny Beatty ignited a second-quarter explosion to give Mohawk High its first victory of the season.
Beatty ran for a pair of touchdown runs and threw for another as Mohawk trampled Freedom, 41-6, last night.
The Warriors are 1-2 overall and in the Midwestern Athletic Conference. Freedom dropped to 0-3 overall and in MAC play.
Beatty accounted for 264 of Mohawk’s 401 yards in total offense. Tied 6-6 after the opening stanza, Beatty raced for TDs on runs of 28 and 10 yards. He then laced a 34-yard touchdown aerial to Colin Bredl that capped a 21-point second quarter.
The Warriors’ John Fleck, a junior running back, broke into the Freedom end zone twice. He opened the scoring on a 13-yard run and tacked on a 5-yard rushing touching in the third quarter.
He finished the contest with 85 yards on seven carries.
Senior Jimmy French completed Mohawk’s rout with a 6-yard rushing score in the fourth quarter.
Beatty completed seven of 16 passes for 171 yards. He also threw three interceptions and ran nine times for 93 yards.
Bredl led Mohawk receivers with 54 yards. Sophomore Vince Menichino and senior Matt Vogel each pulled in two passes for 47 and 58 yards, respectively.
The Bulldogs’ lone score was Derek Lehocky’s 12-yard TD pass to Nate Neely. Freedom was held to 113 yards in total offense.
Mohawk hosts New Brighton in a conference encounter at 7 p.m. Friday.
