MCMURRAY — The Mohawk offense was a little late showing up last night.
The Warriors didn’t record a first down in the first half and managed 179 yards for the the game in a 28-14 WPIAL nonconference loss to Seton-La Salle at Peters Township High School.
“Our defense really stepped up today and kept their option in check,” Seton-La Salle coach Greg Perry said. “We worked hard all week at stopping it. No. 24 (Shane McFarland) is a good football player. We knew we had to get 11 hats around him, because he runs so hard. No. 15 Gio (Menichino) runs hard, too, so we had two guys that we had to worry about stopping. We worked hard at stopping them and it worked out well for us.”
Mohawk (3-5) had six three-and-outs in the first half and posted just 11 yards offensively against the Rebels’ defense.
“We just had way too many mistakes, too many mental breakdowns,” Mohawk coach Joe Lamenza said. “Physically, we were fine. We had some guys out of position and some missed assignments. Those are the mistakes we have to get corrected.”
The Warriors had more success in the second half, picking up nine first downs in the second half and putting up 168 yards.
“They made a couple adjustments at halftime,” Perry said. “They hit a couple options on us. They made their adjustments and hit the holes pretty good.”
Seton-La Salle (6-2) went into halftime up 14-0 on 11- and 18-yard touchdown passes from quarterback Tyler Perone to Dom DelGreco and Daquay Broadwater.
Broadwater scored on 23- and 20-yard runs in the second half.
“We weren’t surprised by anything,” Lamenza said. “All the plays we saw, we had prepared for. They had 25 throwing plays in the first half, so they are primarily a throwing team. We have to stop both the run and the pass, but we didn’t stop either tonight.”
Gio Menichino and Shane McFarland provided 22- and 5-yard touchdown runs, respectively, in the fourth quarter for Mohawk.
Menichino had 60 yards rushing, while throwing for another 78 on 13-of-22 passing. Spencer McConahy pulled in eight of the passes for 32 yards.
“It was a nice win, because Mohawk is an improved team from the last time we played them,” Perry said. “They never quit.”
Twelve different Seton-La Salle players touched the ball — including eight different players with receptions — as the Rebels put up 366 yards offensively, including 191 yards on the ground.
“Whenever we’re successful, we spread the ball around,” Perry said.“We can’t rely on just one guy. It helps us be a better football team. They only had five or six guys in the box. They were dropping everyone else into coverage, so we figured we’d run a little more than we normally want to out of our spread sets. It worked out well for us.”
