Ellwood City Lincoln exploded for 673 total yards in a 58-21 WPIAL Class AA Midwestern Athletic Conference rout of Riverside.
The Wolverines improved their record to 2-2 in the conference, 3-2 overall with last night’s Homecoming victory. The Panthers slipped to 0-4 and 0-5.
Senior Jared Meyers rushed for 224 yards on 19 carries and junior Paul Lutz chipped in with 160 yards on seven tries in Ellwood City’s 654-yard team rushing night. Sophomore Nick Ioanilli added 88 yards on six carries as 10 players toted the ball for the Wolverines.
Meyers opened the scoring with a 59-yard run, but Riverside answered with a 47-yard pass from Zach Gould to Marcel Cleckley. Ellwood got runs of 27 and 1 yards from Lutz and Dillon Horgan before the half, but the Panthers came back just before the break with a 16-yard pass from Jake Dambach to Vinny Howells. Dambach replaced Gould, who was injured in the second quarter and never returned. Gould was 4 of 4 for 93 yards before his injury. Dambach threw 21 times, completing 11, for 142 yards.
Although Ellwood held a 19-13 lead at the half, Wolverines coach Don Phillips was less than pleased. The Wolverines added to their offensive output and tightened up on defense following his halftime speech, as Ioanilli scored on an 82-yard run the first time his team touched the ball, and Meyers added scampers of 53 and 35 yards to put the game out of reach.
“We made some adjustments at the half and they seemed to work,” Phillips said. “We knew we had to pressure the quarterback, we got some hits on him and made him throw before he wanted to. Our defensive backs went man-to-man and it seemed to work.
“I didn’t want the score to be that close at the half, but Riverside was well-prepared,” he added. “I talked to Meyers and Lutz in the locker room and challenged them to play to their ability and they responded. Ioanilli is a big contributor. He plays on all the teams. I have to start giving him some rest — I need him for two more years.”
Cleckley had eight receptions for 99 yards for the Panthers, who totaled 235 yards passing, but just 13 yards rushing.
