Mohawk fumbles away upset bid
Mohawk (14) vs. Greensburg Central Catholic (21)
Written: Oct 16, 2010
The Mohawk High football team couldn’t complete the upset last night.
Greensburg Central Catholic capitalized on two Warriors fumbles in the last 2:30 to claim a 21-14 nonconference victory.
The Centurions (7-0) are ranked No. 2 in the WPIAL in Class AA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Aliquippa, Mohawk’s next opponent, is the No. 1 team in double-A.
Greensburg Central Catholic scooped up a Jimmy French fumble with 2:30 to play and it took over on the Warriors’ 46. Terrance Stepoli ran 21 yards on the first play from scrimmage after the turnover. He capped the drive on the next play with a 25-yard scoring dash with 1:47 left.
Mohawk (2-5) returned the ensuing kickoff to midfield. However, quarterback Johnny Beatty fumbled on the first play. The opportunistic Centurions recovered and ran out the clock.
Beatty was 10 of 27 through the air for 152 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, accounting for both of the visitors’ scores. He tossed a 5-yard scoring pass to Matt Vogel and his 1-yard touchdown plunge knotted the count at 14 before intermission.
The Warriors outgained Greensburg Central Catholic, 204-195, but four turnovers proved to be the difference.
Mohawk returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday on the road against the Quips in a Midwestern Athletic Conference contest.
