Rochester rolls to win over Neshannock
Neshannock (7) vs. Rochester (38)
Written: Oct 22, 2011
The two-game winning streak for the Neshannock High football team came to an abrupt halt last night.
Rochester built a commanding halftime lead and cruised to a 38-7 Big Seven Conference victory over the Lancers.
The Rams (5-1 conference, 7-1 overall) of head coach and Shenango High product Gene Matsook, came in ranked No. 3 in the WPIAL in Class A by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Neshannock (2-4, 4-4) collected 105 total yards, all of which came on the ground.
Rochester dominated from the opening kick.
After losing a fumble on its opening possession, the Rams forced Neshannock into a three and out.
It took only five plays for Rochester to cash in when bruising tailback DeAndre Moon powered his way into the end zone from three yards out.
The Rams flexed their muscle again in the second quarter when it went on a 62-yard drive that culminated in a 2-yard dive by Moon into the end zone.
The Lancers offense could get nothing going, netting just three yards of offense in five first-half possessions.
Rochester finished the first half scoring with an 8-yard pass from Ben Richko to tight end Quintin Goettman, and a 21-yard field goal from Jon Johnson for a 24-0 lead.
Neshannock took the second half kick and picked up its initial first down of the game when disaster struck.
Alex Welker was called for a fumble as he reached for extra yardage.
“I thought he was down and there was no fumble,” Neshannock coach Pat Cuba said.
Rochester wasted no time in converting the miscue into points. Richko hit Goettman again, from 33 yards out, to push the score to 31-0.
The Lancers wouldn’t quit, though.
Welker found a hole in the Rochester line and outran the speedy Rams for a 75-yard touchdown.
“I am proud of these boys,” Cuba said. “Rochester is a very physical team and we never backed down. They played hard all night.”
Neshannock hosts Shenango at 7 p.m. in a conference clash with a shot at finishing with a winning record.
