The Shenango High football team is on a roll.
The Wildcats ran up their first three-game win streak since 2009 with a 36-6 Big Seven Conference rout of Vincentian Academy last night at Glenn “Pop” Johnston Stadium.
Shenango, which clinched its first playoff berth since 1996 last week, improved to 5-1 in conference play, 5-2 overall. The Royals slipped to 1-4, 1-6.
The ’Cats wasted no time getting on the board, notching a safety when Vincentian was called for intentional grounding in the end zone.
Shenango scored again later in the period on a 3-yard run by Jason Wallace.
The Royals put together an 8-minute, 85-yard, 18-play drive early in the second quarter, converting two fourth-down plays. The drive culminated with Anthony Tommarello’s 4-yard run which pulled the visitors to within 9-6.
But it was all Shenango from there, as the Wildcats scored on a 16-yard run by Hunter Waskin, runs of 7 and 10 yards by Tyler Root and a 20-yard run by Wallace. The Wildcats’ defense rose up at the end of the third quarter, stopping Vincentian on downs at the Shenango 5.
Dylan Kleckner made four point-after kicks, but had his streak of 20 in a row halted with a miss on Root’s third-quarter TD.
Root served as the workhorse with 93 yards on 16 carries as Shenango rolled up 347 yards on the ground. Wallace added 86 yards on 15 carries.
“It was Senior Night tonight and I was proud of our seniors,” Wildcats’ second-year coach Mike Commesso said. “Vincentian ate up a lot of clock, but our defense held when it had to.
“We have two games left before the playoffs and the key for us right now is to stay focused,” he added.
Shenango travels to Riverside on Friday night before trekking to Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic on Oct. 24.
