It was the run vs. the pass when Wilmington hosted Sharon in the season opener Friday night.
In the end, it was the Greyhounds who ran away with the victory.
Wilmington lifted the lid on the 2016 campaign with a 30-13 District 10, Region 2 decision over Sharon at Greyhound Stadium.
Wilmington rushed for 261 net yards to the Tigers’ 39.
Through the air, however, Sharon quarterback J.P. McComb finished 22 of 37 for 241 yards. He was 11 of 11 in the first half.
Conversely, the Greyhounds were 4 of 9 through the air for 66 yards, with three different players — Reese Bender, Spencer DeMedal and Bryson Verrelli — throwing the ball. Wilmington won the battle of total yards, 327-280.
DeMedal rushed for 109 yards on 10 carries and scored four times. He staked the Greyhounds to a 6-0 lead with a 21-yard run in the first quarter. Jacob Winters moved the advantage to 9-0 with a 30-yard field goal. DeMedal added runs of 1 yard, 74 yards and 9 yards to close out the scoring.
