Spartans hang tough against Warriors

The Laurel High football team had to hold on against Mohawk on Friday night.
The Spartans led by just a point after three quarters, but added a fourth-quarter score to upend Mohawk 22-14 in WPIAL Class 2A Midwestern Conference action on the Warriors’ field.
Laurel is now 1-0 in the conference, 2-0 overall, while Mohawk, which was in its season opener, is 0-1, 0-1.
The Spartans drew first blood, scoring on a 1-yard run by Jake Collier on the first play of the second quarter.
Cayne Yakubic answered with an 11-yard run, but Laurel came back before the half with a 19-yard pass from Will Shaffer to Jordan Dantico.
The Warriors pulled to within 15-14 with a 20-yard pass from Jaydon Johnson to Parker Lyons and a Yakubic run, but Laurel provided itself with some insurance with a 3-yard run by Lance Hill with 8:42 remaining.
Mohawk threatened several times down the stretch but couldn’t convert.
Spencer Jones led the Spartans in rushing with 78 yards on 22 carries. Shaffer was 5 of 11 with two interceptions for 75 yards.
Dantico snared four passes for 66 yards.
Yakubik finished with 135 yards rushing on 20 carries. Johnson was 6 of 10 through the air with one interception for 122 yards.
Mason McKinley caught three passes for 90 yards.
Laurel hosts Riverside on Friday night.
