Ellwood City Lincoln High didn’t exactly roll out the red carpet for a hometown product.
Nick Lamenza, a 1996 Ellwood graduate who now serves as head coach at Mohawk, brought his Warriors into Helling Stadium last night. The Wolverines sent him home with a 38-7 Midwestern Athletic Conference defeat.
Kyle Crawford rushed for 153 yards on 12 carries. Beau Ewing added 110 yards on 16 carries and Alex Grymes chipped in with 64 yards on 10 attempts for Ellwood, 3-1 in the conference, 4-1 overall. Injury-riddled Mohawk fell to 0-5 and 0-5.
Ellwood totaled 388 yards rushing on the night, with 255 of those coming in the first half, including 123 by Crawford.
The Wolverines led just 7-0 after one quarter and 10-0 with 10:11 remaining in the second quarter when things fell apart for Mohawk. The Warriors fumbled back-to-back kickoffs, enabling Ellwood to score three times in under 2 minutes and take a 31-0 halftime lead. Mohawk fumbled six times in the first half, losing three.
“With the conditions, we wanted to establish the running game tonight,” Ellwood City coach Don Phillips said. “It was 10-0 and two quick fumbles allowed us to open up the lead and it just snowballed for Mohawk after that. I’m happy all three running backs ran hard, Crawford did the things we expect him to do, Ewing banged off people and Grymes ran hard also.
“I like the balance we had with all three backs tonight. Other teams have to respect all the backs then,” he added.
Shane McFarland led Mohawk on the ground with 139 yards on 12 carries and scored the Warriors’ only touchdown on a 57-yard run in the third quarter.
Ellwood hosts top-ranked Aliquippa on Friday night, while Mohawk entertains Beaver.
“Aliquippa is coming here and it was good to get a win for our confidence with the stretch run coming up,” Phillips said. “The kids know what they have to do now.”
