NEW BRIGHTON — The struggles continue for the Mohawk High football team.
The Warriors amassed just 194 yards of total offense and yielded four touchdowns of 64 yards or longer in a 46-7 Midwestern Athletic Conference loss to New Brighton last night.
Mohawk (0-4 conference, 0-4 overall) has lost nine games in a row, the longest active streak in the county.
“Besides the score, there was a lot of improvement,” Warriors first-year coach Joe Lamenza said. “Our young guys are getting better. Week to week, we tell them what we need to work on, and, for the most part, they’re able to correct the mistakes.
“We haven’t put it all together yet. (Last night), we had too many missed tackles, which led to New Brighton’s big plays.”
The Lions (1-2, 2-2) reached the end zone on pass plays of 72 (twice) and 34, along with rushing scores of 72, 48 and 34 yards. New Brighton’s first score, a three-yard run by Mike Nevill in the first quarter, went the shortest distance.
Mohawk reached the Lions’ 25 on the opening possession but couldn’t generate points. New Brighton built a 20-0 halftime lead and coasted in the second half.
Seven of the Warriors’ plays netted a loss of 39 yards.
Shane McFarland led Mohawk in rushing with 56 yards on eight carries.
Thomas Beatty scored the Warriors’ lone touchdown on a 64-yard reception from Vince Menichino in the third period. Marcus Gurgiolo tacked on the conversion kick.
New Brighton rolled up 557 total yards, 334 of which came on the ground. Thomas Mackey generated 180 rushing yards on 16 carries and a score for the winners, while hauling in one pass for 72 yards and another touchdown.
Nevill, the Lions’ quarterback, rushed 10 times for 117 yards and three touchdowns, while completing five passes in eight attempts for 181 yards and a pair of scores.
