The Union High football team had its chances last night.
But every time, Cornell found a way to thwart the Scotties’ scoring opportunities.
The Raiders forced three Union turnovers in rolling to a 42-19 Big Seven Conference victory.
With the game scoreless, the Scotties (1-5 conference, 2-6 overall) drove to the Cornell 29 in the first quarter before turning it over on downs. The Raiders’ B.J. Lipke later blocked a punt that led to their first touchdown — a 31-yard run by Osyrus Fisher for a 6-0 buffer in the second quarter.
The Scotties had a chance to get back in the game, trailing 18-0 in the middle of the third period. However, Union quarterback Andre Jones rolled out and fumbled through the end zone for a touchback.
“That was a key play,” Scotties coach Stacy Robinson said of the fumble. “We did a lot of things in the first half that got us behind the eight ball. It’s been a tough row to hoe this year.”
Drew Robinson, the coach’s son, hauled in a 15-yard scoring pass from Jones to cut the deficit to 26-7 in the third period. Robinson added a second score on a 10-yard dash in the fourth quarter to narrow the margin to 34-13.
The Scotties’ David Wright closed the scoring when he corralled a 20-yard aerial from backup quarterback Joe Salmen.
Robinson rushed for 82 yards on 14 attempts, and Jones was next with 79 yards on 17 scampers.
Union struggled with Cornell’s ground game. The Raiders rushed for 387 yards, led by Fisher, who had 161 yards on 23 attempts. Shawn Owens contributed 97 yards on six scampers.
“We were hurt all game long by the option play,” Stacy Robinson said. “We practiced for it all week, but it’s different in practice than it is in the game. You have to keep your assignments right.
“The kids keep working hard and we’re getting a good effort. They’re really trying hard. But you have to be consistent not sporadic.”
Cornell (5-1, 7-1) reached seven wins for the first time since 1990.
Union travels to Western Beaver at noon Oct. 30 in a conference clash.
