Powerful Sto-Rox lived up to its No. 2 WPIAL Class A ranking last night.
The Vikings held Union to 80 yards of offense while racking up over 400 yards themselves, blanking the Scotties 38-0 in Big Seven Conference action at Socrates Roussos Stadium.
Sto-Rox kept its record perfect at 3-0 in the conference, 5-0 overall. Union fell to 1-2 and 2-3.
Disaster struck the Scotties early. After a three-and-out on their first possession, a bad snap sailed over Union punter Clarence Parchman’s head and the Vikings were in business at the Scotties’ 19-yard line.
Four plays later, Sto-Rox scored to take a 6-0 lead.
“We can’t shoot ourselves in the foot against a team like that,” Scotties coach Stacy Robinson said.
Union continued being giving hosts on its next possession when junior quarterback Joe Salmen was picked off on his own 40.
The Scotties’ defense rose to the challenge and kept Sto-Rox from doing further damage and the first quarter ended with the Vikings holding a 6-0 lead.
Sto-Rox freshman quarterback Lenny Williams opened the second quarter with a 6-yard touchdown scamper to stretch the Vikings lead to 12-0.
Junior Drew Robinson gave the Union faithful a chance to cheer when he took the kickoff back 67 yards to the Sto-Rox 16.
The Scotties would get no closer. Facing a fourth down from the Vikings’ 31, a Salmen pass fell incomplete and Union’s only trip into Vikings territory yielded nothing but frustration.
Three plays later, Sto-Rox scored again on a 45-yard pass and the rout was on. After a quick three-and-out from Union, the Vikings finished the half with yet another touchdown and a 26-0 lead. Running all but one play from inside Scotties territory, Sto-Rox added two more scores in the third quarter before taking out most of their starters for the final frame.
“We knew how good they were and that we would need to play well to have a chance,” Robinson said.
The Scotties try for their third win next week when they hit the road to take on rival Neshannock.
