Root’s late TD lifts ’Cats past South Side

HOOKSTOWN — Freshman Tyler Root scored on a 9-yard run with 1:23 remaining to lift Shenango High past South Side Beaver last night.
Root’s run culminated the 14-play, 80-yard, nine-minute drive in the Wildcats’ Big Seven Conference victory, their first of the season. Key plays in the drive were quarterback Brian Tanner’s 12-yard pass to Anthony Prestopine on third-and-15 from midfield, after which Shenango converted on a fourth down running play to extend the drive.
Junior Tyler Welsh led all rushers with 132 yards on 28 carries and Root added 70 yards on nine attempts.
Shenango rolled up 17 first downs to South Side’s seven and finished with 258 total yards to the losers’ 140.
The Wildcats are now 1-2 in the Big Seven, 1-2 overall, while South Side is 0-3 and 0-3.
