HOOKSTOWN — The Union High football team ran into a buzzsaw last night.
His name was Nathan Block, the South Side Beaver running back who ran for 335 yards on 22 carries and five touchdowns in the Rams’ 55-21 Big Seven Conference rout of the visiting Scotties.
South Side had 519 yards in total offense in the game. Union had 226 yards passing, but -16 net rushing.
“It was a totally embarrassing effort on our part,” Union coach Stacy Robinson said. “There were just too many long runs on the same plays, over and over again. They wanted payback from last year (a 28-14 Scotties win); they wanted to pound us and they did.
“They’re a good football team, though,” he added. “We struggled at times on offense. We use our passing game to set up the run and we weren’t able to do that tonight.”
Union actually hung around the game for awhile. The Rams went up 14-0 early on a pair of long touchdowns from Block and Jacob Berger, but the Scotties answered with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Rush to K’Von Huddleston.
Block added a 32-yard run later in the first period, but Union’s Jullian Johnson came right back with a 32-yard pass from Rush. Cornell Charles’ reception on the conversion pass from Rush pulled Union to within 21-14. Block, though, answered with a 4-yard touchdown run.
The Scotties pulled close one more time with a 5-yard pass from Rush to Charles. Garrison Bell’s kick made it 28-21 with time still remaining in the half. After that, though, it was all South Side. The Rams scored once more before intermission and a total of four more times before the game ended.
Union’s top rusher was Johnson with 5 yards on three carries. Rush was 16 of 25 through the air with one interception for 226 yards.
“We were just outgunned. We were aggressively blocking no one,” Robinson said. “Yeah, it’s back to the drawing board for us. And right now, my drawing board is as big as a parking lot.”
The Scotties are 1-2 in the conference, 1-3 overall heading into Friday’s home game with Shenango. South Side is 2-1 and 3-1.
